About Our Town

Shikohabad is a town and a Nagar Palika Parishad in Shikohabad district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

As of 2001 India census, Shikohabad had a population of 7268. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Shikohabad has an average literacy rate of 56%, with 19% of the population under 6 years of age.

Historical Background

The Shikohabad district Gazeteer published in 1903 A.D. sheds some light on the history and origin of the district. It notes that the chief land owning families of the time were the Rajputs of various clans, who possessed 76.16% of the total land area.

The Rajkunwars traced their ancestry to Hammir Dev Chauhan of Ranthambore, and initiated their rule from present day Bahauddinpur village area near Barosa Sadar. The Rajkunwars were the only ruling clans of Shikohabad to unite all the other clans of the area under one flag.

Who We Are

We are an institution of Local Governance called "Urban Local Body" (ULB). There are various categories of ULBs in Uttar Pradesh and we are classified as a "Nagar Palika Parishad" type of ULB.

We are constituted as per the Constitutional provisions in the Constitution of India through the 74th Amendment promulgated by the Parliament in 1992.

Who Governs Us

We have two distinct wings:

  • Legislature (Governing Body)
  • Executive

The Governing Body is elected by citizens through wards, with additional members including MLA/MP, Municipal Commissioner, and District Magistrate.
